August   2004    Richie together with Chuckie and Cory met with Richard Gebhardt who volunteered to put the Doane Memorial plot plan on his CAD machine to enable us to manipulate all but the fixed objects around to come up with most desired new design of the Memorial.   We are changing the design for a few reasons.  Because it's a road around it and parking lots nearby in winter snow has to be pushed up on top of it.  Also due to traffic it is susceptible to an accident.  Since we have experienced both in negative ways we decided it best to redesign and in the process make it a state of the art Memorial for our Beverly Vietnam Veterans that made the supreme sacrifice.

September 2004  Richie and Richard Gebhardt went to the Memorial armed with two tape measures and several poles and laid out a triangular grid at specific points to get an exact plot plan enabling him to move anything around without distorting the island.  He is now in the process of drawing it on his CAD.  Chuckie had the vision in mind and it was only a matter of getting it on paper so that the Hospital can see what we are going to do.  Their permission is already granted but they require something to file.  We will be including in this design the two extra stones needed to extend to 10 the number of residents that died in Viet Nam.  We hope to have a fitting reopening of the Memorial.  The BHS Classes of late 60's should also include this memorial as part of their celebrations to give thanks for those of them that did not come back from the other side of the globe when their Government gave them the call.

The Doane Memorial Special Meeting being set for Jan 05
(Why this site?)
The Hospital site was chosen because of that criteria and the symbolism that his Dad worked there once and his son Stephen was born there.  We also intended to honor our Beverly Vietnam Veterans that made the ultimate sacrifices.  We were able to get all our materials donated to us and with the sweat of our membership we made our dream come true.  We had a grand dedication.

The change has been given great thought by Chucky, Cory, Richie and the Commander with many concerns from the membership.  A committee is needed to finalize the plans for a motion.

We would like to re-dedicate it in the spring of 2005 therefore we need to go ahead with setting this all up.

February 2005

Charlie, Chet, Eric, Chuck, Cory, JB and Richie meet to discuss new Memorial.  JB provides full size prototype that spawns many great ideas.  We decide to meet on the w/e at the Memorial Site to view the Memorial and what would be needed and talk over any idea's when it comes to presenting it to membership.

March 2005

Prior to the Club meeting Memorial Committee got together and discussed walkway vs. reflecting area.  We have concerns about handicap accessibility and costs.
Membership votes on Memorial Plans leaving the small details for the final drawing we hope to have done for the dinner/dance.

APRIL 2005

Jack and Richie went back to memorial for a second round of pictures for the artist to render us a painting for our presentation.

Photo's from that day.

WINTER 2007 (our first winter)

It was a warm December and the Memorial got vandalized by skateboarders and at least one bike.
They managed to scratch and chip the granite and repairs, cost and can it be fixed will have to be determined at a later date.

MARCH 2007

We had a decent storm going into spring and for whatever reason the Snowplowing Company hired by the Hospital felt they had to pile all the snow on the island as they have in prior years and may not have known about the Memorial but should of at least noted the fence and chain around the front.  Because of all the construction up there they should of been familiar with the grounds in case of a large snowstorm.

APRIL 2007

We ran story in newspaper and got some responses from people that want to help.  People are giving what they can afford.  It's a generous offering we can't turn down.  Repairs and completion of the Memorial will start directly and we should be complete by summer.
